Reading Notes, Week 5, De Burton Part A

-born in Mexican Family, traveled by ship to California
-fought in Civil War, died from malaria
-common practice of "squatting"

The Story: From the Squatter and the Don

-had power to transmit human voice for 500 feet for communication
-fond of dancing with sons and daughters
-wife confronted husband about a "problem"
-he informed her of more squatters on the way
-dangerous squatter William Darrell
-the family is worried about the new squatters to be potentially dangerous to them and there cattle
-searched for ideas to protect their property
-the presence of gold brought riff raff to California
-squatters don't want government land, they want the land of the Spanish people
-squatters locate land and raise crops on the Spanish peoples land

The arrival of the potential dangerous squatters:

-Darrell and his people arrived, looking at each other with happiness
-the men checked each other out
-Darrell loved the looks of his "new" city
-loved the land that was in front of him
-a rifle went off for a celebration of the squatter's arriving, but scared all of them
-talking about shooting their cattle and taking their land
-Darrell requested he took 320 acres of land
-the government has millions of acres for sale, yet Darrell wanted to take from the Spanish
