-September of 1849
-Coast mountains across the bay filled with fog, and the sound of people working
-wooden buildings, canvas housing
-half past six, the bells ring for breakfast, and people come from everywhere
-by 9 o'clock, the town is full of business
-by midafternoon, the crowds in the streets are very active
-by 12 o'clock, the bells go off and it was the sound for dinner
-dinner used to cost about $5
-the dinners were small, but greatly cooked and satisfied the working men
-the view of San Francisco at night was something he had never seen before
-the only thing left for him to visit was the gambling tables
-bars filled with activity and entertainment
-the game monte was the favorite game for people in California
