-California's first large narrative was called The Life of Adventures of Joaquin Murieta

- El Dorado was California's first metaphor
-for years, people have been attracted to California
-SF was a launchpad for the gold rush
-LA grew to be the biggest city West
-deep culture with indigenous tribes
-18th century had the first Spanish explorations
-by 19th century, only sixteen thousand indigenous people remained
-survivors fled and changed names
-North America was known as turtle island
-Indians often kept to themselves
